Unfortunately, this “temp” file is 0 KB and when you try to open it, you get a message saying, “Excel cannot open the file ‘~$this file name.xlsx’ because the file format or file extension is not valid. The last modified date of this file is 7/31/12. In this directory, I also see a file with the same exact file name but it has a ~$ in front of it. While looking in to this, I was looking at one of the files that he is having this problem with and found that its last modified date was 3/12/12, even though he says he worked on the file a couple of days ago. Later, he opens the file and finds that none of his changes have been saved. He is opening a file, making a bunch of edits/changes, saving the file and then going about his business.
